Sources
This Appendix is not intended as either a bibliography, or a complete list of sources of the material in this book. A complete list of sources would be impossible to compile. There does, however, appear to be enough interest in the sources of material to justify inclusion of some kind of listing. We hope that this partial list will provide the reader with some appreciation of the types of sources used to write this book. Except where noted, the author personally visited the listed facilities, and personally searched the listed records.
Correspondence
Correspondence with relatives, and other researchers, is an important source of information. Two file cabinet drawers have been filled with the correspondence generated by this project.
Family documents
Important information, as well as valuable clues, were gleaned from old family documents: personal papers, letters, the Katie Wolff history, baptismal records, land records, etc.
Obituaries
Some obituaries provide valuable information that can not be found anywhere else. Approximately two hundred obituaries were obtained from many newspapers, and from many sources. A majority were provided by relatives.
Census Records
The Federal census records, enumerated every ten years, are one of the most valuable sources for the family historian. The population schedules are of primary importance, but we also used mortality schedules and agricultural schedules. Indexes to some of the census records are available, and were used when needed. We searched and used the census records of 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, and 1900, as well as some special census records, such as the 1860 Census of the Kansas Territory.

Lutheran Evangelical Church Records
The parish registers of the Lutheran Evangelical Church in northern Germany provided most of the information about the early generations of the families included in this book. Microfilmed copies of the registers were searched by the author at the local Branch Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church). A German researcher was hired to translate some of those records which date back prior to 1800. The registers of the following parishes were searched:
